July 9th, 2010 How do i get into managing bands or tours?
I went to a college orientation, and i discovered my intended major, "music business" was pretty much law with some music classes, like…copywriting, and intro to law, and accounting and stuff. Well, i figured it wasn’t the best fit, and now i’m going to a different college for strategic communications, like marketing and stuff, i figure marketing a band or tour would be like better to know how to do. But I don’t even think you need a college degree and I don’t know if it’s preferred, but i am pretty much wondering if they go through a firm or whatnot. ![]()
Your best bet would be to try getting in touch with some of the management companies (Q Prime is huge, maybe the best example of a management co?) and seeing if there’s any type of internship available. Being in/near LA, NYC and/or Nashville is going to be a big help, unless you want to get your feet wet with local talent near wherever you are.
If you have a CD collection, flip through some liner notes or do some Googling on music management companies…

No, generally bands have managers. What you’re doing is trying to get a degree in something completely useless. Good luck, you’re going to starve on the streets.

you don’t need a degree for anything like that. music business classes, and communications classes are good to get well-rounded knowledge. nothing in the music business really will require a degree or anything (with the exception of entertainment law and things like that), usually everything is about who you know. you need to get your foot in the door somewhere and work your way up.
if you want to manage bands and tours, start managing bands and tours. find local bands and start booking gigs for them. maybe go to a record label and try to get an internship. if anything its experience in the music business.
going to school for the music business is typically a waste of money. it does help with giving you experience, and a lot of times it leads to an internship at some point which can be your foot in the door. but if you can get an internship without paying thousands of dollars going into debt than your a lot better off. there’s not much money when you start out in the music business. really there’s not too much money anywhere until your with one of the big record labels that have sold their souls. if you plan on getting out of school and going into the business and making a lot of money, you need to get that thought out of your head right now. it’s a long hard road for anything in the music industry.
