Most affiliate marketing gurus will tell you that the secret of getting top ranking with the search engines is to generate loads of backlinks. And this affiliate marketing tip is in most parts true. However, as an affiliate marketing newbie, you need to be aware that your backlinks, if done wrong, could hurt your website’s search engine ranking. The core principles of you backlink generating strategies must be Variety and diversity.

Variety: This refers to the anchor links you use to link back to your web pages. If you have 1000 backlinks to your website and all have the same anchor tag, red flags will go up with the search engines. If you think about it, the search engines want to gauge your websites popularity based on other webmasters’ assessment of your site. It is hardly likely that a thousand webmasters will all describe your site using the exact same term.

This is just not natural and could get you penalized.

Affiliate marketing tip: Vary the keyword term you use in your anchor tag when generating backlinks for your site. Instead of trying to optimize your site for just one term, try optimizing it for 3 or 4 different terms. This way you have a choice of three or four anchor tags to use

Diversity: By this i mean that all your backlinks cannot be from one website. Again if you have all 1000 of your backlinks coming from a single site, or even webserver, Google will smell a rat. Remember that a web server can host several websites. It is again highly unlikely that although your website is available to the world to view, the 1000 webmaster who thought your content is good enough to link their sites to all live on the same IP address. Not likely!!

affiliate marketing tip: Aim to generate backlinks from a diverse number of sites. Check the IP addresses if you are in doubt. A website with a few backlinks from diverse web servers all over the world, obviously is more relevant than a website with all it’s backlinks from one single server

My top tip is this. To optimize your ability to generate a large number of varied and diverse backlinks to your website, unique content on your webpages is a must. If you build a website in a particular niche that is absolutely packed with useful, unique content, then other webmasters will naturally want to link to you.

Do not lose focus of what message it is you want to convey with your webpages, keep your niche tight and your content fresh. Build a website that is an authority source of information in your chosen niche and the links will be easier to generate naturally.
