Do the British Retail Consortium (BRC) include Internet sale or just the High Street Stores?
After watching an interview with a member of the BRC, I don’t know if their figures are correct, they also rejected figures released from another organisation that sales had increase, although only slightly.
From the interview I saw it does not seem they include internet sales, or at least not a realistic inclusion.
They state that sales over Christmas were down 3% but food sales remained stable. Its interesting that food is the one thing people tend not to buy over the internet.
I appreciate that people will be spending less, now the media are using the words ‘Credit Crunch’ as a marketing tool (watch the adverts), it’s also important as a side point to look at the demographics of the people who shop in the ‘High Street" e.g. older people who don’t internet shop, whose saving have been effected and are naturally more prudent with their money.
The BRC has a responsibility to retail sector (I think and this is my question), but it does not seem to reflect the true amount we are spending on goods and services.
I think during these difficult times information like this must be very clearly defined and explained because if people misinterpret it they could pull their belts in even tighter and this will have a continuing negative effect to the economy.

I thought it was only the big chains, It seems that the media only interview people from the BRC, I wish the media could be more independent.
For the average Joe,(like me) even though this appears not to be a true reflection of what we are spending it’s all we seem to hear.

The high street is a lot more complex than the narrow range of figures released from BRC.
Everyone knows that – so it’s not like they can cause negative effects.
The BRC is made up of very large retailers, so the sales figures from 3 or 4 big chains can dominate the actual result.
It’s like when the press keep reporting the sales of John Lewis (and making out that it’s an indication of the high street) – It’s ONE chain. Whether they had a good or bad christmas is irrelevent.
I think possibly you’ve attached too much importance to the figures of the BRC.
If you were thinking of going into retail and opening a chain you wouldn’t rely on the data from BRC – you would do independant research on the demographics of the area you’re opening in, you would also research footfall levels, and you would look at the type of local businesses surrounding and try to find out the turnover level within those stores.
So I don’t think the BRC is important and I don’t think anything they say has a knock-on effect on the REAL high street.
The only people they upset are the city investors/pension funds who own large chunks of the very big retailers on our high streets.
