March 17th, 2010  Any good topic ideas for a meeting that will promote unity between Arab and American students at my college?

I would like to have a meeting, forum, or presentation for the purpose of promoting unity and understanding between the large middle eastern community in my area and those with only American heritages. I think it is obligatory to touch on Islam for at least a short time. I want to discuss the similarities and why we have differences. Does anyone have any other ideas that could help make this meeting a success? Any ideas at all would be a great help.

If you approach it with the same title as the title of this question, you are going to offend a lot of people. The title assumes Arabs are not Americans. Anyway, I would touch on American versus non-America, particularly Islamic stances on women’s rights, religious freedom, modesty, education, entertainment, and each group’s relationship with different cultures. Do NOT present the forum as "Americans need to be more understanding and tolerant of the poor, misunderstood Muslims." Focus on each group’s attitude, and harboring understanding between each group. Do not just lecture one side.
