March 21st, 2010 How was the first gulf war a success for the UN?
I have a paper to write which involves me explaining how the first gulf war a success for the UN and how the structure/procedures of the UN made this a success. Any ideas? I do realize that in a post cold war environment with no opposition from Russia the UN was able to swiftly deal with the crisis. But anything else ????? PLEAZEr
Was it? Over a six month period five Security Council Resolutions were passed demanding Iraq withdrawal from Kuwait, then authorizing a naval blockade, and ending in a diplomatic fig leaf saying "or else."
During this interval, the Arab League unified the Gulf States and other members to invite the US to send its armed forces into Saudi Arabia, which had become the target of another threatened invasion by the Iraqis. The Coalition eventually had 35 member nations (not all of whom provided military support) and the offer of substantial financial support from the Saudis, Germans, and Japanese to defray much of the US military expenses. (How many members of the UN then…185?)
It was another twelve years and nearly two dozen more UN resolutions before the issue was resolved by force of arms by the US and UK mostly. Iraqi never fully complied with any UN resolution, but rather at every opportunity flaunted its determination to violate, evade, or bribe an exit for itself from the force of any of the resolutions.
In support of the unsuccessful efforts of the UN atomic weapons inspectors, the UN passed about seventeen resolutions, essentially demanding each time yet again that Iraq comply with the last resolution. The Security Council had become useless, impotent, and as we later found out, financial complicit in Iraq’s violations of the UN sanctions it had passed.
